So, what do you crazy kids think? Ideas for what playbook you're interested in? Questions about the genre or how things work? Hit me up here with these very pressing issues and we'll work it all out.
Once people have figured out what they want to play (and had had any questions answered), we can actually move on to making characters and making the 'hood itself.
I'm thinking, in terms of setting vibe, I want to go tropical. I worked out a setting for a MH game that never took off, and I want to remaster/reuse it, I think. A fictional Floridian city called Venice. Really mesh the glitz and the grime of being a super hot sexy tropic spot, a heart of industry, complete with wealthy white people with summer homes. Throw in beaches, a bay, some bridges, and make sure its either so hot everyone is wearing Hawaiian shirts or bathing suits -- or so overcast we get good dramatic rainy scenes.
And that's an excellent place to get big or die trying, yes?

I am now picturing Silas McCoy reimagined as The Lever and making all sorts of toothy grins. Except I have no idea how to play The Lever and will probably pass on it. As far as playbooks that interest me: The Feelgood, The Go-Between, The Schemer.
I will give this more thought, especially once others have chimed in.

Yeah, the Lever is fucking weird! It's like: hey, what the fuck do you do, bro? You're scary. Okay? I don't get it?
Cause the Lever doesn't have the power to back it up (like the Heavy, per se). He just has a scary ass rep and personality. And a willingness to be malicious.
So, really, the lever is about identifying people worth scaring, tracking down their dirty laundry, and then terrifying their stupid little heads into giving you what you want. It seems like a weird play dynamic, but that's what it is. Not bad -- just strange and seemingly awkward to make work? Maybe?

Alright, I was looking and I think I wanna play the Heavy. It seems like a fun, and being a big bad ass who can fuck up other people is really appealing I'm assuming we just come up with a look of whatever the fuck we want?

Yeah, at this point. I know a while back the writer of 'hood was taking recommendations for looks but didn't get much feedback. Maybe we could kick that kinda stuff around and shoot what we come up with back at him. Or, yeah, make up whatever we want as long as we stick to the Eyes - Body - Dress - ( playbook specific detail ) model.
Ooh ooh ooh so the Heavy could have Eyes/Body/Dress/Markings? And markings would be, like, gang tattoos, prison tattoos, old scars, or lots of piercings?

I like the option for his Look Hmmmm...first I gotta come up with a name that I like. I'm thinking Tank.

Tank is a good, solid name. Just double checked the Heavy's playbook -- yeahs, he's a cool/mean customer. Good call on playing him to be scary. He's an interesting choice, since he gets by by never rejecting a job! Fuck morals, you've got dough!

Exactly. I gotta do what I gotta do, y'know? Not really any good to think about why I'm doin' it. You need dough, you do what you're told. And if the people I gotta fuck over piss themselves when I walk in the room, that's the icing on the cake.
Name: Tank Look: Cold eyes, Muscled body, Casual but clean dress, and Scars. Tank is a big guy, think Michael Clark Duncan big. He has shaggy black hair and steely grey eyes, a sort of dangerous kind of hot because of multiple scars across his body from his various jobs, with a long thin one across his right cheekbone from a knife fight a few years back. He's in his late 20's. He's actually sexy when he smiles, but that almost never happens. Stats: Name 1, Hush 1, Brass 2, Wise -1, Straight 0
Moves: Unstoppable When you take the hard way and miss, you may choose all three options to turn it into a hit. Yeah, Boss When you take an order without objecting, negotiating or asking questions, take +1 forward to carry out that order.
Family: He has a younger brother, goes by the handle of Little John. Quick kid, known to have sticky fingers and a devious mind. Parents died in a car crash when Tank was about 18, so he's bee taking care of Little John since then. The kid's about 18, has a job at Wendy's, and gets by. As long as he keeps his head down, he's good.

Fucking love it. When you get the chance, move that to its own thread, titled "Tank the Heavy." I'll use that thread to grill you for more info without distracting the others from discussing playbooks here.

Sounds awesome! I'm just imagining this motherfucker just fucking shit up real good. But anyway. Your choosing the Heavy brought a question to mind: What exactly does Taking the Hard Way entail? At first I thought it was the game's colorful way of saying Going Aggro, but bringing the hurt is covered entirely in what sort of heat you're packing (as a sidenote, I think it's really interesting that your ability to hurt others is determined entirely by your use of a weapon and that no one in the pond is naturally good at killing). I'm swinging back and forth on the Feelgood and the Go-Between. On the one hand, I have a much clearer idea of how to play a Feelgood--how to narrate my motivations, what I need to do, and all that jazz. On the other hand, I've already played one drug dealer (though the situation was quite different and it became a minor detail, as you may recall) so maybe I want to branch out into another character archetype. Hmm. HMM.
Okay, so after giving it some more thought, I have this character in my head who is sleek and sly and thinks he's above it all (spoiler: he's not). He's the Go-Between and he gets people what they want without ever having to get a stain on his clothes. So, Name: Switch Look: A sleek-lookin' type. Hair just right. Crisp clothes--not designer-brand suits (not yet anyway) but some nice discount ensembles. Hawkish eyes. Stats: Name+2 Hush+1 Brass=0 Wise+1 Straight-1 Moves:- Negotiator: When you argue the toss, roll +name instead of +wise.
- Hook-Up: You can kill two birds with one stone by fixing up two names in your payback box with each other. Roll +wise. On a 10+, they both benefit from the deal and you can erase both names from your payback box. On a 7-9, choose 1 or else the deal falls through: You need to make an investment in the deal; take -1 dough. They still need you to do a little job for them. Only one of them benefits from the deal; erase one name but not the other.

Hell yes, I'm down with Mr. thinks he's slick. I like the Go-Between, personally. I think its a neat playbook.
So, this game has two Hold Steady/Act Under Fire moves basically. They're Cover your Tracks and The Hard Way. You do something, and its about whether you're careful or dangerous. So, Hard Way CAN be go aggro if the obstacle is "this guy won't get out of my way." But it can also be "kick this door open while making a getaway" or "hold a room hostage to rob them." That kind of stuff.
Cover your Tracks, in the above situations would be, instead: •Sneak around the guy who won't get out of your way, or walk by him in a disguise, or pay him off •Pick this lock, or find another way •And probably wouldn't work for the last one, unless everyone was really fucking distracted!

Okay, gotcha. Incidentally it took a lot of agonizing to decide on my stats. Fortunately I'm not the biggest carp yet, I still have room to grow! Also, I feel like not enough *world hacks have playbooks with moves that use a not-good stat. It keeps things interesting, and also kinda messy.

You'll be a big fish one day, maybe! Just keep trying! Go ahead and make a thread hat for your character? And I'll start grilling you. This way people can look up your character post if they new a refresher on why they ought to betray you.

I intend to play as the Ice Just going to put that out there. My plan is to take
Can't catch me which means I can use Plan B with my brass stat (+2) and I won't ask twice which lets me ask around using my edge or lead score (+3) instead of my name state, but if I miss I get +1 heat and they go down.
I automatically get a +1 lead weapon because I start with a weapon and can instill penalties on myself to raise it by 1 per penalty, and I'm choosing to add: You got a good deal on it, mark the dealer for payback AND it always attracts a lot of attention when fired. I'm thinking it's a very nice shotgun that blows large holes in people. Advice? Differences in opinion or anything? feel free to tell me no or yes or whatever, I'm still learning how this all works

That all sounds totally legit to me! Those are cool move choices -- they imply you escape less by planning and forethought, but by being willing to do brazenly dangerous things. You're the guy who dives out a second story window to evade pursuit, who races the freight train to cross the tracks just before the bars falls. You get away because your balls are huge. And, personally, I love I Won't Ask Twice. I just think it is cool and so cleanly constructed, as a move.
I really love the idea of a noisy, scary, sexy shotgun. So, with two penalties you'll have an Edge+3 weapon to start, which is scary shit. It's not Hot thought, I believe, since you didn't pick that option. So its a totally legit Shorgun? Or more likely just a clean shotgun. I doubt you'd go around killing people with your properly licensed and traceable shotgun.
I like it all.
